Sorry about the picture.  We couldn't get a good angle for our own shot, but the front is now terraced and covered for an extension of the restaurant.

When we first came into the town square, filled with tour buses, knapsacked pre-teens, and the railway station, our hearts sank.  Hotel Eurossola hadn't been in any guidebooks.  Nothing in the area was, but we'd wanted to go from Piemonte to cashmere outlet stores to Lugano and still see some Alps, so this was the town we wanted.  We just took a chance, without a reservation, at less than half of what we were paying anywhere else. (About $84 dollars for our queen bed and corner room in 2000.  In high season of 2008 the same room was going for $128, a tremendous bargain.)

The hotel was serviceable, with an adequate restaurant.  This is on a main route from Germany to Italy, so you can use your German in town if you don't speak Italian.

Domodossola is also a gateway to the Dolomites/Italian Alps; so if you're headed north from Rome, you may find yourself here at the end of the day.

SHOPPING

Happily, the buses pulled out and the pre-teens with them, and we were left with a ski town in fall, with buildings of medieval origin and a strange mix of fashion shops, bars, hardware stores, and the like.  This is not a place you come to for shopping, but if you're here, there are some strange and wonderful souvenirs, junk, magazines, and what have you to lighten the rest of your trip.
