This is awkward, but we feel we should share bad experiences as well as good ones. The page Places - Florence details one such.

We give as nice a review as we can to Locanda del Sant'Uffizio (see Piemonte) because it got such great reviews in various books; but the special suite was drab and a little damp, they lost our reservation, and the restaurant wasn't up to snuff.

One place which might have been great, but we'll never know, is the Sestri Levante in Helvetia. Two faxes and two e-mails went unanswered. To us that indicates the kind of management we wouldn't trust in a hotel. (Remember that second chance to make a first impression line?)
