Even a DSL line may take awhile to download this spectacular
but byte-filled presentation from www.torredicalapiccola.com. A
cable modem will take much less time.
A better first-look bet, with lots of pix and info, is http://www.tuscany.net/torrecalapiccola/ especially if you're on dial-up.
About 150 km northwest of Rome, along the highway bordering the Mediterranean, on an island just off the coast, on a high bluff, incorporating a 13th century Spanish watchtower, is a hotel we will come back to without fail. An infinity pool with the coldest water we've ever been in, rooms in stone cottages, a view beyond peer. The hotel has four different rate seasons; a seaside double varies from $275 to $480, depending on the season -- relatively a real bargain for oceanside -- and it's lovely.
Ah, vacations.
Past Porto San Stefano

The restaurant is just passable. Breakfast is a major event, unusual in Italy, with eggs and meats, probably because of the preponderance of German tourists. Supper was uneventful. It's a drive back down into town, but there are probably better restaurants. If we hear of any, we'll let you know. Don't let this discourage you. You will thank us (and by extension Karen Brown) all your days that you heard of this place.
SHOPPING
Porto San Stefano is a combination tourist and fishing harbor. It has a business district with the usual stores. Save your clothing and leather shopping for recommended cities such as Rome, Milan, Florence, and Venice (and the Foxtown Mall - see Lugano).
